Noisy Blomberg Dryer: Squealing, Grinding, Thumping and Humming
Compact Blomberg dryers are usually quiet, which is why a new noise gets noticed fast, especially in a condo closet or a stacked laundry pair. Some sounds are normal, especially on heat pump models. Others mean a part is wearing out. Here’s how to tell the difference.
Normal sounds on a Blomberg heat pump dryer
- A steady hum or buzz from the compressor, similar to a refrigerator.
- Gurgling or flowing sounds from refrigerant moving inside the heat pump.
- Pump sounds when the dryer pumps water to the tank or drain hose.
- Clicks when the dryer changes direction or the compressor switches on and off.
Squealing or squeaking
A high-pitched squeal that follows the drum rotation usually comes from a worn idler pulley, drum rollers or bearing. It usually gets worse over time and should be fixed before the part seizes.
Thumping
- A heavy item like a shoe or a wet pillow tumbling in the drum.
- A flat spot on a drum roller after the dryer sat unused.
- A dryer that isn’t level, or a stacked pair that isn’t secured with the stacking kit.
Grinding or scraping
A worn drum glide or felt seal lets the drum rub against the front or rear panel. You may see marks on clothes or bits of felt. A coin or bra wire caught between the drum and the panel can also scrape. Check the drum for anything stuck in the holes or seams.
Rattling
Coins, buttons or zippers in the drum are the most common cause. On heat pump dryers, check that the filter drawer and kick plate are fully closed. A loose panel or the dryer touching the wall can also rattle.
Loud buzzing or a hum with no tumbling
If the dryer hums but the drum doesn’t turn, the motor may be struggling against a seized pulley, a broken belt or a jammed drum. Turn it off and don’t keep restarting it. See Blomberg dryer not starting or not turning.
What you can do
- Empty the drum and check for loose items.
- Make sure the dryer is level and doesn’t touch the wall or cabinets.
- On a stacked pair, check that the stacking kit is installed.
- Clean the filters. A clogged heat pump dryer runs harder and longer.
What a repair involves
We open the dryer, inspect the belt, idler pulley, rollers, glides, seals and motor, and replace worn parts. These are common repairs, usually done in one visit when the parts are available.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep using a squeaky dryer?
For a short time, usually yes, but the part will keep wearing. A seized pulley can damage the belt or motor.
Why is my new heat pump dryer louder than my old dryer?
The compressor hum is normal for heat pump dryers. What isn’t normal is squealing, grinding or banging.
