The main control board is the most expensive electronic part in a Blomberg dryer, and it is the part we replace most often on this brand. This guide explains what the board does, how a failing board behaves before it dies completely, what else can look like a bad board, and what a replacement really costs.

If your dryer is completely dead right now, start with our step-by-step guide: Blomberg dryer won’t turn on.

What the control board does

Think of the board as the dryer’s brain. It:

  • reads the buttons and the program knob,
  • runs the display,
  • switches the drum motor on and off and changes its direction,
  • controls the heat pump compressor (on heat pump models) or the heating element (on vented models),
  • reads the temperature and moisture sensors and decides when the clothes are dry,
  • watches the water container and the door switch,
  • shows an error code when something goes wrong.

Because everything passes through the board, a failing board can produce very different symptoms.

Symptoms of a failing Blomberg control board

A board rarely dies without warning. Watch for these signs:

  1. Display flickers, freezes or shows random segments.
  2. Buttons stop responding — first one or two, then more.
  3. The dryer resets itself in the middle of a cycle and returns to the start screen.
  4. The program stops for no reason, and starting it again only works sometimes.
  5. Error codes appear that don’t match the real situation — for example a water container warning with an empty container.
  6. The drum turns but there is no heat, and the heating parts test fine.
  7. The dryer works only after you turn the breaker off and on.
  8. Completely dead — no lights, no sound, although the outlet has power.
  9. A burnt electronics smell near the control panel.

One of these signs alone doesn’t prove the board has failed. Several of them together, especially getting worse over a few weeks, usually do.

What can look like a bad board (but isn’t)

Before replacing a board, a good technician rules out the cheaper causes:

  • Wiring harness damage. A rubbed-through wire or a loose connector causes the same random resets and dead display. The fix is labour only — no board needed.
  • Door switch. A faulty switch makes the dryer refuse to start, while the display works.
  • Water container sensor or pump. Can trigger a container warning even when it is empty.
  • Sensors. A failed temperature or moisture sensor can stop the cycle or make it run forever.
  • Power supply problems. A loose plug or a bad outlet can make the dryer act strangely.

That is why we never replace a board on guesswork. We check the wiring, the switches and the sensors first.

Why Blomberg control boards fail

From what we see on repair calls across Metro Vancouver, the usual reasons are:

  • Power surges — after a power outage, a storm or work on the building’s electrical system.
  • Heat and humidity. Dryers live in small closets with warm, moist air. Over the years this stresses the electronics.
  • Vibration. A stacked dryer on an unbalanced washer shakes the board and its connectors.
  • Age. Electronic components wear out.

How to make the new board last longer

  • Use a surge protector rated for the dryer’s power supply, or ask an electrician about whole-home surge protection.
  • Turn off the breaker during long power outages and wait a few minutes after the power comes back before turning it on again.
  • Keep the closet door open during the cycle so heat and moisture can escape.
  • Level the washer so the stack doesn’t shake.
  • Clean the filters — a dryer with poor airflow runs longer and hotter, which stresses the electronics too.

Replacing the board — how it works

  1. Diagnosis. We confirm the board has failed and rule out wiring and other parts.
  2. The right part. Boards differ between models and production versions, so we order the board that matches your exact model and serial number.
  3. Replacement. About one hour on site. We transfer the connectors, check every plug and secure the wiring.
  4. Testing. We run a test cycle and check heating, drum movement and draining.
  5. Warranty. Labour warranty up to one year. The board carries the manufacturer’s parts warranty.

How much does it cost?

Service call & diagnosis $85 (included in labour if you go ahead)
Board replacement — labour $150–180

Is it worth it?

For most Blomberg dryers — yes. A compact heat pump dryer is an expensive appliance, and when the board is replaced, the rest of the dryer (drum, motor, heat pump) is usually in good condition for years. On a very old dryer with other worn parts, we tell you honestly if replacement makes more sense.

FAQ

How do I know if my Blomberg dryer control board is bad?

Typical signs are a flickering or frozen display, buttons that stop responding, random resets, cycles that stop by themselves and a completely dead dryer with power at the outlet. A technician confirms it by ruling out wiring, switches and sensors.

Can a power outage damage the control board?

Yes. A surge when the power comes back is one of the most common causes of board failure.

How much does a Blomberg dryer board replacement cost?

Labour is $150–180 plus the board. The price of the board depends on your model; we quote it after diagnosis.

Can wiring cause the same symptoms as a bad board?

Yes. A damaged wire or a loose connector can cause resets or a dead display. In that case the repair is labour only.

How long does the replacement take?

About an hour on site once the correct board is available.
