Blomberg Heat Pump Dryer: Water Tank, Drain Hose and Installation Tips

A ventless heat pump dryer doesn’t blow moist air outside. It cools the air inside the machine, turns the moisture into water and collects it. That’s why Blomberg heat pump dryers can go in condo closets with no vent to the outside. It also means the water has to go somewhere, and the installation matters more than with a vented dryer.

Water tank or drain hose

The water can be collected in the tank, which you empty after every load, or sent straight to a drain with the supplied drain hose. In a stacked pair with a Blomberg washer, most people connect the dryer’s hose to the same drain as the washer so they never have to empty the tank.

• Blomberg’s manual says the drain hose should be attached at a height of no more than 80 cm.
• Make sure the hose isn’t stepped on or folded between the dryer and the drain.
• Secure the hose end so it can’t slip out of the drain while pumping, or you’ll have water on the floor.

Closet installation

A heat pump dryer gives off warm air into the room. If it’s in a closet with a door, Blomberg specifies two ventilation openings in the closet door: one near the bottom and one near the top. Without them the closet overheats, drying slows down and components work harder.

Room temperature

Blomberg rates its heat pump dryers to run between +5°C and +35°C. In Metro Vancouver that usually matters in two places: unheated garages and storage rooms in winter, and small, closed laundry closets in summer.

Signs of a drain or water problem

• Water tank fills much faster than normal, or a tank warning comes on with the tank empty
• Water under the dryer
• Drying stops mid-cycle with the drain hose connected

Check the hose for kinks and make sure the drain isn’t blocked. If that’s fine, the condensate pump, a hose inside the dryer, or a sensor may have failed.

Switching from the water tank to the drain hose

Most Blomberg heat pump dryers ship with the water going to the tank. Switching to the drain hose is done at the back of the dryer: the internal hose that normally feeds the tank is disconnected and the supplied drain hose is connected in its place. The exact steps and parts are in your installation manual. If the dryer is stacked on a washer, it usually has to be pulled out to reach the back, so plan for two people or ask us to do it.

• Keep the drain end no higher than Blomberg’s limit of 80 cm.
• Route the hose so it can’t be crushed when the dryer is pushed back.
• If you use the washer’s standpipe, make sure the washer hose and the dryer hose both fit without sealing the pipe.

Why lint affects the water side too

The water collected by a heat pump dryer passes through a small pump. Lint that gets past a dirty filter drawer can end up in that water and slow or block the pump. Keeping the lint filter and the filter drawer clean protects the drain side as well as drying performance.

Can a heat pump dryer go in a closet with no vent?

Yes, that’s what it’s designed for. It needs the closet ventilation openings described in the manual and a room temperature between +5°C and +35°C.

Can I drain the dryer into the same pipe as the washer?

Usually yes. Most stacked Blomberg pairs share one standpipe. Check that the dryer hose is secured and stays within the 80 cm height limit.

The tank fills after every load. Is that normal?

Yes. A full load releases a lot of water. What isn’t normal is a tank that overflows, a tank warning with an empty tank, or water on the floor.
