Hisense Refrigerator Not Cooling? 7 Causes and What to Do

Your Hisense fridge is running, the light is on, but the milk is warm. Or the freezer is fine and only the fridge section is losing cold. Hisense refrigerators have become very popular in Metro Vancouver over the last few years, and “not cooling” is the problem we are called for most often on this brand.
Most causes are fixable in one visit. Some you can even fix yourself. Here is how to tell the difference.
First: how is it not cooling?
The pattern tells a lot:
- Freezer cold, fridge warm — usually airflow between the freezer and the fridge: frost on the evaporator (defrost problem), a failed evaporator fan or blocked air vents.
- Both fridge and freezer warm — usually the compressor is not running: a start relay, the condenser fan, the control board, or in rare cases the sealed system.
- Cools, then warms up, then cools again — often a defrost problem building ice over a few days.
- Fridge too warm only in summer — dirty condenser coils or poor ventilation around the fridge.
7 most common causes
1. Wrong temperature settings
It sounds obvious, but it happens: the setting was changed by a child, during cleaning, or after a power outage. Set the fridge to about 3–4 °C (37–38 °F) and the freezer to −18 °C (0 °F).
2. Blocked air vents
Hisense fridges move cold air from the freezer into the fresh food section through vents. A big container or a bag pushed against the vent can stop the airflow. Leave a few centimetres of space in front of the vents.
3. Dirty condenser coils
Dust and pet hair on the condenser coils make the fridge work harder and cool worse. On most models the coils are behind the lower back panel. Unplug the fridge and vacuum them gently.
4. Condenser fan not working
The condenser fan cools the compressor. If it stops, the fridge cools poorly and the compressor overheats. You may notice the back of the fridge is hotter than usual and the usual fan sound is gone.
5. Evaporator fan not working
This fan is inside the freezer, behind the back panel. It pushes cold air into the fridge section. If the freezer is cold and the fridge is warm and you don’t hear a fan inside the freezer when the door is open with the door switch pressed, the fan may have failed.
6. Defrost system failure
If the defrost heater, sensor or thermostat fails, frost builds up on the evaporator until air can’t pass through. Typical sign: thick frost on the back wall of the freezer, and the fridge slowly gets warmer over a few days.
7. Compressor not starting
If the compressor clicks on and off every few minutes or doesn’t run at all, the start relay or the control board may be at fault. A sealed system problem (compressor failure or a refrigerant leak) is less common and needs a certified technician.
What you can check yourself
- Check the temperature settings on the display.
- Make sure the door closes fully and the door gasket is not torn or folded.
- Clear the vents inside the fridge and freezer.
- Check the space around the fridge — leave a gap at the back and sides so it can breathe.
- Clean the condenser coils (unplug first).
- Look for frost on the back wall of the freezer.
- Listen — is the compressor running? Is the fan inside the freezer running?
If you found heavy frost: you can unplug the fridge for 24 hours with the doors open (put the food in a cooler and towels on the floor). If it cools normally afterwards and then the problem comes back in a few days, the defrost system has failed and needs a repair.
Stop here. Removing the back panels, testing fans, relays, heaters and the board, and anything with refrigerant is technician work. Refrigerant work in Canada requires certification — our technicians are ODP certified.

Why is my Hisense freezer cold but the fridge warm?
Most often the evaporator fan has stopped or the evaporator is covered with frost because the defrost system failed. Blocked vents are the easiest cause to check first.
