Midea Refrigerator Repair: Common Problems and Fixes
Midea refrigerators are good value and common in Metro Vancouver condos and rentals, from top-freezer models to French-door and bottom-freezer fridges. Most Midea fridge problems come down to a handful of causes. Here’s how to narrow it down, what you can safely check yourself, and when it’s time for a repair.
Midea fridge not cooling, but the freezer is cold
This is the most common Midea refrigerator repair we do. The cold air for the fridge section comes from the freezer, so if the freezer is fine but the fridge is warm, the air isn’t getting through. Typical causes:
- Defrost problem. The evaporator coil behind the freezer panel ices up and blocks airflow. A failed defrost heater, defrost sensor or control is usually the reason. Frost on the back wall of the freezer is a strong sign.
- Evaporator fan failed. If you can’t hear a fan running in the freezer when the compressor is on, the fan may be dead or frozen in ice.
- Blocked vents. Food pushed against the air vents inside can starve the fridge section.
Both the fridge and freezer are warm
- Dirty condenser coils or no clearance. The fridge can’t release heat. Vacuum the coils (unplug first) and leave space around the fridge as the manual says.
- Condenser fan not running (on models with a fan at the back near the compressor).
- Compressor start components or the compressor itself. Clicking every few minutes with no cooling is a typical sign.
- Control board or temperature sensor problems.
Midea fridge freezing food
Check the temperature settings first. If the settings are normal, a faulty temperature sensor, a damper stuck open or a control problem can overcool the fridge section.
Water leaking inside or under the fridge
Usually a clogged defrost drain. The water that melts during defrost can’t reach the drain pan, so it freezes or overflows inside the fridge. On models with an ice maker or water dispenser, check the water line and connections at the back too.
Noisy Midea refrigerator
Buzzing, grinding or rattling often comes from a fan hitting ice or a worn fan motor. A loud knocking can be the compressor or loose mounting. Some sounds are normal: gurgling refrigerant, clicks from the defrost timer or control, and a hum from the compressor.
What you can check yourself
- Set the fridge to about 3–4°C and the freezer to about −18°C.
- Close the door on a sheet of paper. If it slides out easily, the gasket isn’t sealing.
- Clear the vents inside and don’t overpack shelves.
- Vacuum the condenser coils and check clearance around the fridge.
- Listen for the compressor and the fans.
Health Canada recommends keeping the fridge at 4°C (40°F) or below. If it stays warmer, move perishable food to a cooler while you wait for the repair.
What a technician does
We measure temperatures, check the defrost system, fans, compressor start components and controls, and, when needed, the sealed system. Our technician holds an ODP certification for refrigerant handling. Fans, sensors and defrost parts are the most common repairs and usually the most affordable. Compressor and sealed-system work costs more, and on an older fridge we’ll tell you honestly if replacement makes more sense.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a Midea fridge take to cool after a repair?
Several hours to cool noticeably and up to 24 hours to reach normal temperature.
Is it the compressor?
If the freezer is cold, the compressor is working. Most “fridge warm” calls are defrost or fan problems.
Do you repair Comfee refrigerators too?
Yes. Comfee is Midea’s value brand. See Comfee appliance repair.
