LG Washer OE Error: Washer Won’t Drain

An OE error on an LG washing machine means the washer can’t drain the water from the tub within the expected time. LG lists it as a drain error. It appears on both front-load and top-load models.

What to check yourself

1. Drain hose. Look behind the washer. The hose shouldn’t be kinked, crushed or pushed too far into the standpipe.
2. Drain pump filter (front-loaders). Behind the small access panel at the bottom front of the washer there’s a filter that catches coins, hair ties, lint and small socks. Put down towels and a shallow tray, drain the water through the small hose, then unscrew and clean the filter.
3. Listen to the pump. Run a Spin Only cycle. A hum or whir from the bottom of the washer means the pump motor is getting power. Silence often means the pump or its wiring has failed.
4. Frozen drain line. In unheated spaces, check for ice in winter.

Once it’s cleared, run a Tub Clean or rinse-and-spin cycle to confirm.

When it’s a repair

If the filter and hose are clear but the washer still won’t drain, the drain pump has likely failed or has a broken impeller. Less often the problem is a blockage deeper in the sump hose, a wiring fault or the control board. Drain pump replacement is one of the most common washer repairs we do, and it’s usually a same-visit fix.

• IE (sometimes read as 1E): water inlet error. The washer isn’t filling, not a drain problem.
• UE: unbalanced load. Redistribute the laundry.
• FE: overfill. Usually the inlet valve or water level sensor.

How we diagnose OE

1. Drain the tub and check the filter and drain hose.
2. Check the sump hose between the tub and the pump for blockages.
3. Test the pump for power and check the impeller.
4. Check the wiring and control if the pump isn’t getting power.

How to prevent OE errors

• Clean the drain pump filter every few months on front-loaders.
• Empty pockets and use a mesh bag for small items.
• Use HE detergent and don’t overdose.
• Make sure the drain hose isn’t sealed into the standpipe.

How do I clear the OE code?

Turn the washer off, unplug it for a minute, fix the cause and run Spin Only. If it drains fully, the code is gone.

Does a top-load LG have a drain filter?

Most LG top-loaders don’t have a user-cleanable filter. Check the drain hose and the house drain first. If those are clear, the pump or a blockage inside needs a technician.

Can I use the washer with an OE error?

No. If it can’t drain, it can’t spin, and running more cycles can overheat the pump.
