Bosch Dishwasher E15 Error: Water in the Base
E15 on a Bosch dishwasher means the leak-protection (AquaStop) system has detected water in the base pan under the dishwasher. The float switch has lifted, and the dishwasher will usually run its drain pump and refuse to start a wash. Bosch’s own guidance is to turn off the water supply and stop using the dishwasher until the cause is found.
Why it happens
- Too much suds from using regular dish soap, or the wrong detergent, so foam spills into the base.
- A leak inside the dishwasher: a cracked hose, a loose clamp, a worn pump seal or a leaking valve.
- A door or tub seal leak.
- Water already in the base from an earlier leak that hasn’t dried out.
What to do
- Turn off the water supply to the dishwasher, usually under the sink, and switch off the power.
- If you only use dishwasher detergent and the problem appeared suddenly, the base may just need time to dry out.
- Don’t keep resetting it and running cycles. If there is an active leak, water can damage your floor and cabinets.
When it’s a repair
Finding the source means pulling the dishwasher out, draining and drying the base, and running it with the panels off to see exactly where the water comes from. It’s a common repair and usually a single part: a hose, seal, pump or valve.
Should you tip the dishwasher to clear E15?
You’ll find advice online to tip the dishwasher back to drain the base pan. We don’t recommend it with the dishwasher still connected. It can strain the water and drain connections and the power cord, and it only removes the water, not the cause. If the base is dry and E15 still shows, the float switch itself may be stuck.
How to prevent E15
- Use only dishwasher detergent. Never use hand dish soap, even a few drops for pre-rinsing.
- Scrape dishes instead of rinsing them with soapy water.
- Check the filter at the bottom of the tub regularly so water drains properly.
- Look under the sink from time to time for drips at the supply and drain connections.
What affects the repair cost
It depends on where the water comes from. A loose clamp or a hose is quicker to fix than a pump or tub seal. Dishwashers also have to be pulled out from under the counter, so installation affects the time as well.

Is E15 the same as a leak from the AquaStop hose?
Not exactly. E15 means the float in the base detected water. The water can come from many places inside the dishwasher. The AquaStop hose is one of them.
Can I use the dishwasher once E15 clears?
If it clears after drying and doesn’t come back, yes. If it returns after a cycle or two, there’s an active leak that needs fixing.
