Midea Dryer Repair: Not Heating, Not Drying or Not Starting

Midea electric and heat pump dryers are common in Metro Vancouver homes and condos. Most dryer calls fall into three groups: no heat, long drying times and a dryer that won’t start. Here’s how to narrow the problem down.

Midea dryer not heating

  1. Check the breaker. Electric dryers use a double breaker. If one half trips, the drum can still turn but there’s no heat.
  2. Check the airflow. A clogged lint screen or vent makes the dryer overheat, and the safety parts can cut the heat.

If power and airflow are fine, the usual failed parts are the heating element, the thermal fuse, a thermostat or the thermistor. A blown thermal fuse is often a sign of a vent problem, so the vent needs to be fixed too or the new fuse will fail again.

Midea dryer takes too long to dry

  • Clean the lint screen before every load and wash it occasionally if there’s a film on the mesh.
  • Check that the duct behind the dryer isn’t crushed and the outside vent flap opens freely.
  • Don’t overload the drum.
  • Check that the washer spins properly. Wet clothes take much longer to dry.
  • Wipe the moisture sensor bars inside the drum. Coated sensors can end cycles too early.

In condos and townhomes with long vent runs, lint builds up faster. If it’s been a few years, have the full vent line cleaned. A clogged dryer vent is also a fire risk.

Heat pump dryers

Midea heat pump and ventless dryers dry at lower temperatures, so longer cycles are normal. They depend on clean filters and a clean heat exchanger. If drying gets slower week by week, clean the lint filter and any secondary filter as the manual describes. Lint packed deep in the heat exchanger needs a technician.

Midea dryer not starting

  • Make sure the door is fully closed. A worn door switch or latch can stop the dryer from starting.
  • Check child lock and delay start settings.
  • If the drum doesn’t turn but you hear a hum, the drive belt, idler pulley or motor may be the problem.

Noisy Midea dryer

Squealing usually means worn drum rollers or an idler pulley. Thumping can be a flat spot on a roller. Scraping can be a worn drum glide or felt seal.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to use the dryer if it’s not heating?

If the cause might be overheating from a blocked vent, stop using it until airflow is checked.

Is a Midea dryer worth repairing?

Heating elements, thermal fuses, belts and rollers are common, affordable repairs. Almost always worth it.
